Chapter Fourteen

At seven p.m., everyone had returned to the conference room to finish the meeting.

Owen, Rebel and Tyler had a huge secret they couldn’t tell anyone. And they sure couldn’t show the footage that Tyler had shot at the art gallery. Not yet, and no thanks to Angie who had spent the time fighting with her ex-boyfriend while the three had been interviewing Ms. Higginbotham. Angie had driven them back to the makeshift studio, crying the whole way. Afterward, she had walked off the job.

That didn’t surprise Rebel and Tyler one bit, but Owen was a bit upset that people could be such quitters.

Owen said, “I would never walk off the job like that. It’s bad manners.”

“Speaking of bad manners,” Tyler said, and angled his head at Scott, who was running down the hall like he was afraid he would miss something.

“You’re back already, Scott?” Rebel asked. She was now even more suspicious that the NYU student been up to something.

“Yeah, I felt much better after I’d had a nap.”

“All right, people, listen up,” Nancy announced and clapped her hands for their attention. “We might have Kevin Hadley lined up. Our agents are talking to his agents, working out a deal for his appearance on Legends Revealed.” She nodded at Scott. “Okay, you’re on. Clue us in on the care and feeding of an enchantress.”

The adults snickered as Scott began. “My assignment was to find out exactly what an enchantress is. There is a lot of myth surrounding them. One belief is that the first enchantress was Lilith, Adam’s first wife. She left him for the archangel, Samuel, and became an enchantress after learning some secrets of the supernatural universe from him. Enchantresses feed on power that they take from men. Like vampires.”

Rebel rolled her eyes and so did Tyler. Were they really going to have to suffer through Scott’s ridiculous theory?

Scott plunged forward confidently. “Let’s just say they feed on the desires and energy of men that they… tempt. They can take the form of any woman they want to, usually tapping into the subconscious of the man they are trying to influence. The only problem is that the enchantress normally has some kind of deformity. It can be anything from a birthmark to a hand shaped like a bird’s claw.”

“Well, that won’t be hard to find!” Mitch said, getting a few chuckles.

Scott kept going. “Some myths equate enchantresses with sirens that lure sailors with their songs. Other myths say an enchantress can only be seen in her true form by someone with the ‘second sight.’ And in those cases, the enchantress takes the form of a cat or a dog. There are also reports that the enchantress will come to her intended victim in a dream. In most stories I found, the enchantress is attracted to its victim by either a great sin or an unrequited love. Surprisingly, there are actually a few cases where an enchantress has helped the man it has latched itself on to.”

Mary spoke up.
